yeah, the appropriate place for social technology in our lives is really important. it's highly addictive and there has to be balance. without balance, it will really start to erode your connection to reality and to other people. being online is fun and has a lot of unique advantages that are helpful, but you have to remember to not actually replace your human relationships and experiences with online ones.

What a wise man! Balance is always good in everything. I imagine it can become a problem for some. But it's probably the symptom not the real problem. You know what the boy said in the video, the classical I have 400 FB's friends but I'm alone? Before the social medias we could find many saying they had no friends. Loneliness isn't due to social medias but it underlines the loneliness. When someone has many virtual friends and feel alone all the same, we find many to blame the social media. But it's not something new. The loneliness feeling is something natural that we have to embrace to understand it. When we tame the loneliness, the fact that we are basically alone with oneself, becoming strong with this idea, then we are ready to go out. It's just natural.

I think social media can be positive or negative, depends on how one uses it...just like any other vice in life...sure if one is addicted to social media and checks out of life because of it, that is not a good thing...but people who use drugs or are alcoholics or workaholics do the same thing, they let their addictions take over their life, or people who do nothing but sit around and watch tv all day...no difference just a different vice...I don't agree that it is an illusion though...for some who play games and become different characters perhaps, but I personally am my real self online...what you see or read, is what you get, it is really me, no faking it I would be the same if we were sitting in a room together instead of on a forum...I also don't agree that it is an illusion for if it were, then people would not be so affected by it either positively or negatively...
Now with that said, I personally don't use twitter or instagram and tweet ever thing I eat or take a gazillion selfies...I am not one who is constantly on my phone, I won't even pay for the latest and greatest phone, for I basically only use it to keep in touch with my family and friends and for sense of security...it is nice to have a phone if your car breaks down, or in an emergency situation, to get directions etc... so I would never leave home without my phone...Yes I sometimes check my mail or my facebook feed when I am out...but I personally don't let it interfere with whatever it is I am doing, (hiking, visiting friends/family, out for a nice meal etc) So I think it depends on the individual person...I see it being more of an issue with younger people, or teenagers, they are usually the ones constantly on their phones...
There are also many positives...many people have met people online that they would have never met if it weren't for social media...many old acquaintances have been reunited because of social media, many people can see places they would never be able to visit because of social media...many people have acquired jobs through social media and many people are able to express themselves creatively through social media...So social media has opened many doors for many people...I think it is like anything else in life, there is the good and there is the bad...It just depends on how one keeps it...

I thought at that yesterday. My life would have been totally different if social media existed in my teen age. I lived in a small town, far from a big city. I found my environment and the future it promised not attractive. I made bad choices due to that. If I had social media and this openness on the world that young people have now, certainly things would have been so much different.
I don't want deny the difficulties they bring but we can't forget what marvellous opportunities they bring also.

yeah, my childhood was so very different from the world kids are experiencing now. The internet was a new thing when I was about 10 or 11, and barely used by most. Gradually it became more common place, but even the internet usage by the time I graduated high school was considerably less compared to how involved our lives are in the internet now.
