I liked Hooligan but I think maybe it's a personality thing.
I will say, however, as a "sequel" to Mellon Collie and Machina, its not entirely matching up yet.
My own personal arbitrary comparisons, though maybe will change in time? Just want some more GUITAR please!
1st 6 songs of ATUM:
Atum theme- great
Butterfly Suite - good
The Good in Goodbye - great
Embracer - eh its ok
With Ado I do- eh it's ok
Hooligan - good
1st 6 songs of MACHINA:
The Everlasting Gaze - great
Raindrops & Sunshowers - good
Stand Inside Your Love - great
I of the Mourning - great
The Sacred and Profane - good
Try, Try, Try - good
1st 6 songs of MELLON COLLIE:
Mellon Collie Theme - great
Tonight, Tonight - great
Jellybelly - good
Zero - great
Here Is No Why - good
Bullet With Butterfly Wings - great
Now I realize that ATUM is his first REAL attempt at telling a chronological rock opera, like a movie, scene by scene. So there will necessarily be "down" songs because of the pacing of the story. Especially when setting it up. It can't be just BAM BAM BAM one hit after another (especially at the beginning) because stories aren't told like that. And while Machina and Mellon Collie are "concept albums" in a general sense because they have a story more or less behind them, they aren't the same as ATUM where it's like each song is specifically related to a scene like in the progression of a movie. So, there is that.
Still waiting for the bangers, tho. The dislocated outliers we've heard (Beguiled, Empires and Neophyte and Harmageddon) all seem nice but not rocking my socks off. We need material that can compare to the very best from MCIS and Machina and that is a tall order. Will it be done?
