That hints at the real reason which, besides social media centralizing online discussion, messageboards are dying: the cultures of these forums were mostly formed by a single kind of person – straight white men in their twenties – and if recent history has shown anything, it’s that there’s no desire to keep fostering communities which cater predominantly to them. Ultimately it’s a lot easier for minority voices to start Facebook groups than going to the trouble of adapting to a forum culture which wasn’t set up to welcome them, or even buying a domain and server space to establish their own.
Message boards cater to straight white men in their twenties?? The original o-board from say, 2000-2004, was really quite diverse, in every way. Even o-board v.2 was pretty diverse. So I don't see that. Plus, if I were some sort of minority, or even a female, I'd find it a tad insulting that the author of this article is assuming that I don't have the funds, intelligence or ambition to buy a domain or server space to start my own message board.

I'm not a guy in the music business so I wouldn't know. I'll take a few guesses.
Men want to be around other men when speaking like "netphorians" yes, the vile that is said over there, most men don't want a woman seeing them or hearing them behave that way. Savage-like would ruin their gentleman image. Or because women may distract them, but I highly doubt that to be the case.
Every time I create a new thread the thread title wont take the alphabet letters. I press the b button and the symbol pops up instead. Also the space to put the title in is a very tiny space. Im quite sure this didn't happen before when I made a thread.
