so I watched Nymphomaniac vol. 1 and vol. 2 on Netflix recently. You know, the controversial Lars von Trier films.
In my opinion, they weren't as pornographic as they were made out to be in the press - more just graphic. Pornographic means it would be built to be enticing. This was more just a blunt depiction of the act within the framework of a story. There weren't any super long, drawn out, enticing scenes to jerk off to. But for example, when a dude was eating a pussy, there it was, bluntly portrayed as an act but without the cinematographic quality to make it pornographic - in my humble opinion. There wasn't much enticing about any of the stuff in this. Just very brutally honest visual depictions that don't hide anything.
The movie itself was interesting in its character exploration and also subject exploration of nymphomania. Culturally, people seem to think of nymphomania as just being really horny and so it's talked about with a smirk, as if we're all sort of secret nymphomanics deep down. But this movie really gets into it as an extremely crippling, psychological and social disease. It's a real problem for the main character and it completely ruins her life, as she is a slave to a staggering compulsion that utterly destroys her relationships with everyone around her. And it isn't a one person a day kind of thing - it's multiple people every day. Scheduled, even. And if someone isn't scheduled, she goes out and finds someone (anyone) to feed the compulsion.
It's a really sad story. But with how it sheds light on the disorder - I think it's actually a pretty important and ground-breaking film.
The ending in the last minute of the film almost ruined it for me, though. But if I forget that and think about the stuff in the rest of the 4 hours of the film, the over-all message is an effective one that stays with you. If you can handle all the graphicness, I recommend it.

I recommend 'They Live' a movie from 1988. Lots of violence so if you don't like that, don't watch it - lots of guns and a fight scene. This sums it up without giving too much away: "Watching They Live is a conflicting experience. It is an odd combination of eye-opening messages with lackluster acting, powerful social commentary with 1950’s B-movie special effects and gripping satire with odd punchlines. Constantly making viewers oscillate between “Wow, that was genius!” to “Wow, that was corny!”, it is difficult to properly evaluate the movie from a cinematographic point of view. However, from a “message” point of the view, They Live is gold. "Trailer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJC4R1uXDaEPart 1 - www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4vdTqNWcr8

I loved They Live but, I love all John Carpenter movies.
I have seen three movies lately:
A Walk Among the Tombstones- pretty much a perfect movie though somewhat disturbing
This is Where I leave You- very excellent family dramady that pulls off serious and humor at the same time very well
Hunger Games Mackingjay pt one- Kind of a dissapointment but I may have set it up to fail- cant stand the money grubbing hollywood execs that decide to milk a book for more than one movie unless its absolutely necessary and near as I can see- it wasnt.

I caught a little bit of King Ralph early this morning on TV. An old movie from '91 in which John Goodman plays a very simplistic American commoner who finds out he's now going to be the King of England, and he has to learn to fill the shoes. I liked the movie when I was a kid, and I like it now. There's just something about it that really amuses me. I guess it's just that I've always been a fan of the monarchy, and watching some good-hearted oaf attempt to become a refined monarch just makes me smile. Peter O'Toole is in it too, and I like him.

yeah i haven't seen it since I was a kid, so it was sort of nostalgic for me. John Goodman's great, too.
How old is your youngest?

Saw Dracula untold. Was a pretty tight flick until the closing scene where they tried to prepare you for a sequel. As you watch the movie they already suggest a sequel and so in the back of your mind you plan one out and mine seemed waaaay more interesting than whatever they have in mind.
Also is anyone going to check out Exodus with Christian Bale? Initially I thought I would but now Im sort of meh over it. These past few weeks have been so dull with releases.
And yes, I thank God daily that I live in a time and place where I am free to just watch movies and think about art.

lol, I saw Gone Girl the other day too.
I thought it was okay. I thought the downsides were that it was too long and not enough "thrill" aspect, but I thought the story was a bit interesting at least.
Also finally saw final Hobbit installment - I didn't think it was that great, to be honest. Again, I thought it was too long for the amount of story available and while the spectacle was fine, I thought there was too much spectacle over story.
I don't even mind long movies, but if it's going to be long, at least make the story worth the time.
